1. Have a question?

  2. We understand that not everyone is a design expert or a web-to-print wizard, so from time to time you may have some questions about some of the terminology used around the site, or even just a query on how our ordering process works.

We've compiled a list below with a selection of the questions that we are asked most - which we have then separated by subject - along with short, clear, and concise answers so that you can quickly get the information you need to feel confident and comfortable progressing with your project.

Of course, as always, our dedicated Account Management team are just a call or email away if you have a query regarding something that is a little more complex or isn't available here.

Print Basics

  1. What does finished size mean?

The finished size is the final, trimmed dimensions of a printed piece - the exact size it will be once all excess paper and bleed are cut off - marked on the diagram below by the white dotted line.

As an example, if you were to select a finished size of A5 for your flyers when ordering, that’s the size they will be when you receive them.

  2. What is bleed?

Bleed is extra artwork or colour that extends beyond the finished size of a page and ensures that the printed piece has no unintended white borders when trimmed down to size.

It’s needed because during printing and trimming, the paper can shift slightly. Without bleed, even a tiny shift can leave a thin white line along the edge. Bleed gives us a 'safety margin' so your final product looks clean and professional.

The example below shows the bleed zone, indicated by the red area, extending beyond the finished size, which is shown by the white dotted line.

  3. What does CMYK mean?

CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (Black). These 4 colours make up the model used in the vast majority of printing, and by combining them in various amounts we can then create almost any other colour.

We request that all artwork is supplied in CMYK as this avoids us having to convert it on receipt, which can sometimes alter colours and design elements.

  4. What does DPI stand for?

DPI (Dots Per Inch) measures print resolution - how many tiny dots of ink are added to one inch of paper. The higher the DPI, the sharper, clearer & more detailed the print becomes.

For the most high-quality print, your artwork should be 300 DPI where possible. If you are unsure, you can check this using applications such as Adobe Acrobat or Photoshop.

  5. What does GSM mean?

GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter and is the standard unit of measurement for both a papers weight and it's thickness. The higher the GSM number, the thicker and more rigid your paper will be.

As an example, the paper in your printer at home is likely between 80-100 GSM, whereas a greetings card would probably be between 250-350 GSM.

  6. What are stock types?

Stock type refers to the paper or card that your job will be produced on, each with their own attributes and best use cases. In addition to a GSM, there are also different options for the paper finish, such as Gloss (shiny & smooth - perfect for pictures), Silk (softer sheen, professional feel) & Uncoated (no shine, natural feel & ideal for writing on).

All of our products have a select list of available options to ensure that your printed items are fit for purpose, but specific stocks are available on request - just get in touch with us about a bespoke quote.

Setting Up Your Artwork

  1. What file types do you accept?

We can accept a wide variety of file types, including PDF (preferred), JPG, PNG, TIFF and even Word documents.

Please note: if you want to upload your artwork at point of purchase, you will have to supply your files in PDF format.

For those who want to provide their artwork at a later time, we will supply you with a link to which you can upload your artwork whenever convenient. Please be aware though, your turnaround time begins at point of artwork receipt, and we cannot be held responsible for any delays due to artwork not being uploaded at point of purchase.

  2. Why is PDF format preferred?

PDF files are the preferred file format for printing as they lock the exact layout, fonts, images and colours of your design, ensuring that nothing shifts or changes when it is opened on someone elses computer. This keeps your artwork stable & accurate and ensures that what you see on screen reflects what will be printed.

We can accept other file types, but will have to convert them to make them compatible with our presses, which may cause unforseen changes to your artwork, for which we cannot be held responsible.

There are also a variety of ways to convert your files to PDF format yourself, so you can double check that you are happy with your artwork before you submit it. Our recommended conversion tool is Adobe Acrobat, which has both a free online version as well as a paid version with extended capabilities.

  3. What is a safe zone?

A safe zone is an area around the outside edges of your artwork where you should avoid adding any key details - things such as text or barcodes - to ensure that they are not trimmed away during the finishing process.

Due to the nature of the printing and finishing process, sheets of paper can shift slightly, and providing your artwork with a safe zone acts as a buffer so nothing important gets cut off during trimming, acting almost like an internal bleed.

Below you can see the safe zone marked in red, just within the white dotted line, which indicates the finished size of the document.

  4. Do you have any templates?

Almost all of our products have a variety of different templates available for you to download and use whilst creating your artwork.

To access the templates for your chosen item, navigate to the Downloads & Resources tab on the relevant product page, where you can select a variant from the list provided. Our template ZIP files contain both PDF and Adobe Creative Cloud app files, so you can chose to work in the way that suits you best!

If you cannot find a template for your product, feel free to get in touch with us and we will do our best to provide it to you, as well as add it to the site for others to access in future.

  5. Can I supply multiple artworks in a single file?

You can supply multiple artworks within a single file, as long as all of the designs are intended for the same product and are the same size. For example, if you are ordering 5 different A3 posters printed on 170 Silk, you can supply the artwork as a single PDF comprising of 5 equally sized pages.

  6. Can you set up my artwork for me?

If you require your artwork to be set and/or designed for you, please get in touch with one of our Account Management team, who will be happy to talk through your requirements and work alongside you to generate a solution tailored specifically for your project utilising our bespoke services options.

  5. What is perforation?

Perforations are a line of tiny, evenly spaced holes or cuts added to your printed material so that a section can be cleanly and easily torn away without damaging the rest, making it ideal for tear-off forms, vouchers, reply slips, and tickets whilst avoiding the need for scissors.

  6. Can I have custom sizes / quantities / finishes / paper stocks?

Whilst we have provided a variety of preset sizes, finishes and quantities that cover a wide scope, we understand that every project is unique and presents it's own challenges and demands - and sometimes requires a special touch.

If there are any requirements that you have further to what is available via the store, please do get in touch with our friendly Account Management team about a bespoke order. They will then get back to you as soon as possible to discuss the available options.

    About Bespoke Orders

Placing An Order

  1. Why can't I see any prices?

If you are unable to see any prices throughout the site, it is because you are not logged in to your account.

If you currently do not have an account, and you work for either a charity or non-profit organisation, then you can apply for an account below:

If your organisation does not meet these criteria, please feel free to contact our friendly Account Management team, who will be able to help you with your project.

  2. What are your order cut off times?

For express orders, you must approve your artwork before 1pm. For standard turnarounds, we require your artwork to be approved before 3:30pm.

  3. What is meant by turnaround time?

When placing an order for certain products, you may be required to select a turnaround time - which indicates how many days you are allowing for production to be completed once your artwork is approved. We offer a variety of turnaround time options, with faster turnarounds commanding a higher price.

For most of our large format products, the turnaround time is fixed at approximately 4 working days. If you need a large format product quicker, please reach out about placing a bespoke order with one of our Account Managers, and they will endeavour to help.

    About Bespoke Orders

  4. What are the turnaround time options?

Express delivery means your order will be printed and delivered the next business day, provided you approve your artwork before 1pm.

A 1 working day turnaround means your print will be produced and ready for delivery after 1 full working day from artwork approval.

A 3-4 working day turnaround means your print will be completed and dispatched within 3 to 4 working days after approval.

  5. Why can't I change my delivery option?

To make your experience as smooth as possible, all of our products come with completely free delivery to Mainland UK as standard and aim for delivery within 3-4 working days.

If you need to get your order in a rush, you can either upgrade your Turnaround Time to ensure that your order is despatched earlier, or if it is imperative that you receive your order on or before a specific date, please get in contact with our Account Management team about a bespoke order.

    About Bespoke Orders

  6. Why do I have to calculate the cost of some items?

All of our large format products are priced per square metre of material, and so you will be asked to provide your finish size before calculating the price of your request. This is simply to allow you more freedom when working with large format products, where standardised sizes are less frequently used.

  7. Can I amend my artwork once it has been uploaded?

As your artwork is injected into our producton workflow at point of order, we are unfortunately unable to amend artwork after this point. Please be sure utilise our library of handy templates - located under the Downloads & Resources tab of your chosen product - to double check that your artwork is formatted correctly, and that you are happy with your artwork before finalising your purchase.

  8. Can I make changes to my order once it has been approved?

Due to how we handle your orders and add it into our producton workflow, it is unlikely that you will be able to make a change to your order once it has been placed. For this reason, please ensure you are 100% happy with your supplied details before providing sign off and completing your order.

  3. What if I need my delivery for a specific date?

If your order is required for a specific date, we recommend that you place a bespoke order with our Account Management team who will be happy to help you with your project and ensure that your delivery lands on time.

    About Bespoke Orders

  4. Will you provide tracking information?

Tracking information is available on the vast majority of orders placed on the site, and will always be provided to you where possible. To ensure that we can provide you with tracking information for your order, please make sure to provide your email address when placing your order.

  5. What happens if my delivery is late?

Whilst we always endeavour to make sure that you receive your delivery in a timely manner, sometimes elements outside of our control can cause delays to the receipt of your goods, such as machine breakdowns and staff sickness. If your order does arrive late, please get in touch with us as soon as possible so that we can investigate and provide you with a suitable resolution.

Once your order has been passed to the courier, we cannot accept any liability for delays, but will provide you with any relevant details required for you to raise a dispute with the courier on request.

  6. What happens if I miss my delivery?

If nobody is available to take receipt of your order at the delivery address when the courier attempts their delivery, most couriers will attempt again the next day, before returning to their depot for you to collect. In many cases, this will incur an additional charge from the courier to organise redelivery and/or storage.

If your goods are returned to us as the sender, we will get in contact with you to discuss redelivery or collection and any necessary storage, as well as any associated costs for these services.

We highly recommend making sure someone is available at the address the working day after you receive your dispatched order email and until your order is received, if possible.

  7. What happens if I am not happy with my order?

If your order arrives damaged or is not as expected, please get in touch with us as soon as possible at support@charityprintstore.org.uk and include your order number, a description of the issue and any relevant photos. This helps us to investigate quickly and get a resolution for you.

Please ensure that you sign for the consignment as damaged on receipt if you are unhappy, as otherwise it becomes very difficult to claim against the courier and to get your goods resupplied.
